NIS Indices: Sensors, Not Truth Values

Read discourse, expectations and representation separately.

A methodological handout on the purpose of NIS sensors, interpreting their time series and the limitations of uncalibrated indices.

01

Intent

NIS compares different responses to a shared event. Relevant aspects include not only individual values but also persistence, temporal order and divergences between information spaces.

02

What Is Observed?

X and Reddit provide separate discourse samples. Prediction markets show capital-weighted expectations subject to specific resolution criteria. Contrarian signals flag anomalies; PRI describes expected and observed political representation.

03

What Do We Obtain?

Timestamped index snapshots with original measurements, sources, topic/event associations, coverage and method version. A snapshot is an intermediate product on the way to a substantiated hypothesis.

04

Time Series and Smoothing

Change, velocity, baseline and fast or slow EWMA series can reveal different temporal patterns. Smoothing reduces short-term fluctuations but can conceal peaks, so raw values are retained. Half-lives are parameters to calibrate, not natural constants.

05

What Cannot Be Inferred

Platform discourse does not represent the general population. A market price is not proof of an event, an anomaly is not proof of inside information, and a representation gap is not a popularity score. Insufficient data remain visible as a gap.

06

Relationship to ROS

Signals are checked against primary sources and additional evidence. Hypotheses and assessments enter the shared Research State; later corrections preserve the earlier information state.
